Zonealarm has screwed with me for the last time. Can anyone recommend an alternative free firewall program?

What OS you using?  I stopped using ZA a long time ago.  In XP I simply set the Widows Firewall to outbound and had anti-virus checking all inbound stuff.  With Vista, simply switch the Windows Firewall on and again have anti-virus checking evberythijng.
Other than that, always ensure your router's Firewall is on (assuming you're using a router - and if not why not?).

I'm using XP.

I was always under the impression that Windows firewall covered inbound connections (other than the exceptions) only? At least, that's what it seems to say on the Exceptions tab in the settings. As for anti-virus, does AVG free cover anything at all?!

...and no, I don't have a router. Never really saw the need for one as there's only this one PC in the house. Would there be an advantage in me getting one, other than for the hardware firewall?

1 computer?  Is this the dark ages?  Raspberry
With the amount of devices in the home with online capabilities, a wireless router is pretty much standard equipment these days.  Having said that, if you don't need one there's no point purchasing yet.
I thought XP Firewall could be switched, maybe I'm wrong, it's been a while.  Either way, as long as it's on and your anti-virus and copy of XP are kept up to date you should be fine.  ZA is the only 3rd party Firewall I'd use, but it always seemed to misbehave with age and the number of applications grew.  That's why I binned it, but then I was already behind hardware.

I'm not a big fan of AVG, prefaring Avast, but there are many who prefer AVG to Avast.  Try them both and just pick whichever you prefare.  Both are as good as retail products, with the possible exception of NOD32.

Follow this link to see how secure you are.  The site will fire packets at all the usual ports to check your security.  There's plenty of info on there too for tips and advise.

Hehe, yeah I think this is the only piece of equipment in the house that can go online! Funnily enough I do tend to walk around my house in chain mail and call the missus "wench".

I'll have another look at the firewall settings, but I'm pretty sure it's inbound only. Totally agree on ZA - it always lasted a few months and then started buggering everything up.

I'll have a crack at that link tomorrow.

Cheers for your help  Thumbs Up
